When you hear the word ‘cosmetologist’ what do you think of? What about ‘hair stylist’ or ‘beautician’? The truth is, cosmetologists are both hair stylists and beauticians (though we haven’t heard that one from anyone without a perm in a long time). That’s not all either, cosmetologists can hold a variety of job titles based on where they work. There’s so much more to cosmetology than meets the eye. If you’ve been wondering what cosmetology is all about and what exactly it means to be a cosmetologist, read below!
What Does a Cosmetologist Do?
Each state has its own regulations on what a cosmetologist can and can’t do when they’re licensed. This is determined by each state’s board of cosmetology. Here is a break down of what services they can provide with a license in Nevada, per the Nevada Board of Cosmetology.
- Scalp treatments
- Skin care
- Makeup application
Where Do They Work?
Though interest, passion, and skill vary from professional to professional, there are many potential career paths someone with a cosmetology license could pursue. Here are a few jobs that a cosmetologist might have.
- Salon owner
- Salon manager
- Hair stylist
- Hair colorist
- Makeup artist
Many people don’t know that a cosmetologist could own their own business if they wish. Many of our Aveda graduates have gone on to do amazing things, including becoming salon owners. It all depends on the goals of the professional. This list doesn’t even cover all the potential opportunities they could have!
What is a Cosmetologist License?
In order to practice cosmetology professionally, you must obtain a license. This is true in all states. It is illegal to practice cosmetology for profit without a license, and it can mean serious consequences if you do.
